How can a place of memory be illuminated without ever diminishing its depth or its spiritual resonance?

Dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, the Dandi Kutir Museum stands as a powerful symbol of peace, resistance and inner strength. Our intervention focused on the exterior lighting of the Salt Mount and its surrounding landscape, shaping a nocturnal presence aligned with Gandhi’s values and legacy.

Inspired by the historic Salt March, this lighting composition translates a gesture of quiet determination into a serene and contemplative nighttime atmosphere. The architectural vision called for the Salt Mount to be bathed in a soft, moonlike glow, encouraging visitors to experience a slow and meditative walk around this iconic form.

The exterior lighting is structured around four essential elements: the central Salt Mount, the surrounding sand mound, a water canal and the landscaped gardens. Each component is revealed with restraint, preserving the overall harmony of the site. Through precise optical control, light is directed with accuracy, enhancing the monument while minimizing light pollution and visual disturbance.

Adaptable lighting scenarios were developed for the Salt Mount, allowing the illumination to evolve according to cultural events or commemorative moments, without ever compromising its contemplative character. The surrounding landscape and access roads are lit with subtlety, ensuring that visual attention remains centered on the monument itself.

At night, the Dandi Kutir becomes an elegant and silent landmark. A place where light does not dominate, but gently carries memory, dignity and reflection.
