The Salt Mount — Realization
A Beacon of Meditation, Luminous Tribute to Mahatma Gandhi
The lighting project for the Salt Mount, the emblematic landmark of the Dandi Kutir Museum in Gandhinagar, embodies the poetic vision of the project’s lead architect. The ambition was to transform this monumental structure—41 meters high and 90 meters in diameter—into a beacon of meditation, bathed in a soft, subtle light reminiscent of moonlight. This luminous presence invites visitors into nocturnal contemplation, paying tribute to the Salt March led by Mahatma Gandhi in the struggle for India’s independence.
Rising gently into the night, the Salt Mount is illuminated using high-precision optics that ensure visual comfort and the complete absence of light pollution. This restrained and respectful approach allows visitors to fully immerse themselves in the serene atmosphere of the site, which becomes both a spiritual and cultural landmark.
The surrounding landscape and peripheral roads are illuminated with the same discretion and harmony, ensuring that visual attention remains focused on the Salt Mount while providing a safe and calming environment for nighttime visitors. Through this elegant and balanced intervention, conceived by Atelier dada, the Salt Mount is revealed as a place of stillness and reflection—a luminous landmark honoring the enduring values and legacy of Gandhi.
