Silken Photons

Sumel 3 is a contemporary business complex rooted in a long tradition of textile craftsmanship. More than a functional hub, it carries the memory of a material culture shaped by patience, gesture and time.

For this second project commissioned by HN Safal, Atelier dada was invited to intervene after construction, with the task of reimagining and refining the existing lighting design. Working within a restrained budget, the objective was threefold: soften a cold and glaring nighttime atmosphere, create a strong and desirable nocturnal identity, and transform the complex into an inviting place for future office and retail occupants.

The lighting concept unfolds as a luminous narrative inspired by textile processes. During the day, light remains hidden, as if cocooned within the laser-cut columns. As dusk settles, silken photons awaken, transforming into delicate, shimmering light moths that animate the architecture.

Each block embodies a moment of the day. Block A evokes dawn, Block B reflects midday, Block C captures sunset, and Block D fades into twilight. Through this subtle chromatic progression, light pays homage to the natural cycle of daylight, echoing the rhythm of textile production.

As night deepens, these light moths emerge from their cocoons, gliding along façades and reflecting softly on the paved pathways between the buildings. The space becomes animated by a gentle dance of light, enveloping visitors in an atmosphere that is both elegant and intriguing.

Through this transformation, Sumel 3 gains a new nocturnal presence. A contemporary lightscape that celebrates a timeless textile spirit, while offering a poetic and captivating identity to a place once defined only by function.
