How can light weave together landscape, memory and collective life into a single nocturnal experience?

Aligned with the Dandi Kutir Museum, also known as the “Salt Mount,” the sculpture garden dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, the convention center, and a striking cable-stayed bridge, Swarnim Park unfolds over 1.5 kilometers. Its name, meaning “Golden Radiance,” reflects its role as a connective public space, visually linking Gandhinagar’s major civic and cultural elements.

Commissioned to design the park’s lighting masterplan, Atelier dada developed a sensitive and structured luminous approach, working in collaboration with HCPDM, in charge of the project’s execution.

To reinforce continuity and coherence, Atelier dada introduced four key adjustments to the initial lighting scheme. The first was to visually connect both ends of the park, transforming it into a continuous promenade. The second established a clear visual hierarchy, allowing users to intuitively navigate through the various sequences of the park. The third created a strong visual link with the Gandhi Museum, visible at the end of the main perspective. Finally, the lighting sought to evoke the atmosphere of an urban living room, a warm and welcoming space where everyone could feel at ease.

The lighting palette reflects the meaning of Swarnim, privileging a warm white, soft and restrained light that evokes the calm radiance of gold. This choice, uncommon in the Indian context where cool white light is often favored, was driven by the ambition to offer a soothing visual experience while preserving the nocturnal landscape.

Pedestrian nodes marked by white conical shades and large luminous shades in picnic areas subtly echo the form of the Gandhi Museum, or “Salt Mount,” paying tribute to the historic Salt March led by Gandhi, a founding symbol of Indian independence. This visual reference establishes a gentle rhythm throughout the park, shaping intimate, joyful, and communicative spaces at its heart.

Through this approach, Swarnim Park becomes a place where light connects people, landscapes and memory, offering Gandhinagar a welcoming and symbolic nocturnal identity.
