Dar Yomn — Vision
Living with light, letting climate shape space
The Snoussi Villa, located in Tunis, belongs to the early architectural projects designed by atelier dada, in collaboration with architect Rached Chaabani. This publication presents the initial design submitted and approved for the building permit in 2007, prior to later transformations requested during construction.
The architectural language is deliberately minimal. Clear and legible volumes are composed through a precise interplay of solids and voids, structuring domestic functions while encouraging natural ventilation and daylight. The site layout reveals a careful articulation of thresholds, patios, and intermediate spaces, establishing a continuous dialogue between interior and exterior.
Drawing from Mediterranean vernacular architecture in an abstract and restrained manner, the project reinterprets essential archetypes: thick walls, controlled openings, patios, and subtle plays of shadow and depth. These elements respond naturally to the climate of Tunis through passive strategies, while asserting a contemporary expression free from ornamentation.
The ground floor, mezzanine, and upper-level plans demonstrate a rational and fluid spatial organization, structured around living spaces and circulation. The sections highlight a precise work on heights, level variations, and the relationship between ground, walls, and roof. The façades express a calm and balanced composition, animated by carefully positioned openings and integrated solar protection elements.
This initial version of the Snoussi Villa reflects the early architectural stance of atelier dada: an architecture of essentials, attentive to climate, natural light, and use, where modernity emerges through respect for context and Mediterranean memory.
The project later underwent significant transformations during execution at the client’s request. The final built version will be presented in a separate publication, in order to clearly distinguish and preserve the founding intentions of this original design.
