A Mosque Revealed
Paint, local craftsmanship and concealed light on Avenue de Sarrault, Goussainville
Located on 29 Avenue Albert Sarraut, at the edge of a residential district, the ACMG Essalam Mosque of Goussainville occupies, a visible position in the city without being truly identifiable as a place of worship. By day, its façade appeared as an ordinary corner building. By night, it almost disappeared into the continuity of the street.
Within the Lighting Master Plan developed for Goussainville between 2009 and 2011, available on this link, Atelier dada proposed a simple and economical transformation, combining surface treatment, graphic identity, local craftsmanship and integrated light.
The project worked with the modest existing façade, using paint, pattern and light to reveal a latent identity already present in the use of the place.
The challenge was also economic. The intervention had to remain realistic within a very limited budget. Rather than treating this limitation as an obstacle, Atelier dada approached it as a design condition: how could a discreet place of worship gain presence, dignity and visibility through simple means, local tools and accessible craftsmanship?
The proposal therefore relied on lightness of the tools. No major architectural transformation was required. By day, a warmer façade tone and a street-art arabesk painted pattern on the upper part of the building gave rhythm, scale and cultural resonance to an otherwise mute surface. At street level, the existing metal grille was visually transformed through an optical illusion: a painted Islamic-style doorway was superimposed onto the façade, giving the entrance a more ceremonial and welcoming presence.
Between these two registers, Atelier dada proposed a simple perforated metal band carrying Arabic calligraphy and saints words. Concealed linear LED strips, integrated above and below the band, would gently wash the façade, highlighting both the painted arabesk pattern and the symbolic doorway.
At night, the intervention created a soft and elegant luminous envelope. With minimal equipment and precise placement, the façade gained a sacred glow, like a quiet halo wrapping the building. The mosque could finally be recognized from the street, without excess, without monumentality, but with calm, dignity and a renewed sense of belonging for the muslim community of the city.
The project illustrates one of the intentions of the Goussainville master plan: to reveal not only major landmarks, but also the places that structure daily life, memory and belonging. Through a limited number of precise gestures, light became a tool for recognition, connection and urban care.
