The G Ring — Goussainville

The station column imagined as an extension of Goussainville’s Green Beam

Custom Design

Client: City of Goussainville

Status: Vision

Location: Goussainville, France

Year: 2011

A vertical halo extending, at station scale, the luminous thread of the Goussainville Lighting Master Plan.

In the Goussainville Lighting Master Plan, developed by Atelier dada between 2009 and 2011, available on this link, the overall project had a name: The Green Beam.
This beam imagined a laser beam symbolically connecting the city’s old centre to its new centre, from the towers of their two churches: Saint-Pierre in the Vieux Pays and Saint-Michel in the contemporary centre.
This luminous line inscribed in the night an essential relationship: that of a city composed of several times and several centralities, yet meant to be read as one shared territory.

The G Ring emerged as a direct continuation of this idea.
Designed for the stations of Goussainville, this luminous column transforms the beam into a halo. The ray becomes a circle. The line becomes a ring. The luminous axis connecting the city’s major landmarks is translated here at the scale of the pedestrian: of waiting, arrival and departure.

By day, the column remains a sober, vertical and immediately identifiable urban element.
By night, its luminous shaft supports the station surroundings, while the upper ring draws a green signal, visible without excess, like a punctuation of the Green Beam within the city’s mobility places.

Beyond its aesthetic dimension, this column is conceived as a tool for orientation, welcome and identity.
It was intended to mark the stations as gateways into the city, accompany the daily flows of residents and contribute to the night-time hierarchy defined by the Lighting Master Plan.

Through The G Ring, Atelier dada proposed a light able to connect scales: the city and the pedestrian, symbol and use, the larger urban line and the everyday gesture.

This proposal belongs to the lighting project developed for Goussainville between 2009 and 2011, within the framework of a public-private partnership.
The project was shortlisted but never built.
